February 2024

3rd Whitton Scout Group & Edmund Hillary Explorer Unit

What a busy start to the New Year is has been, with Beavers moving up to Cubs and Cubs moving up to Scouts, and our Explorer Unit ever growing!

I am extremely happy to report having entered our 2023 Census figures, that our numbers have increased 100% since our return from the Covid out break. So thank you each and everyone of you, from parents to young person to Exec and Uniform Leaders!

Date for your Diaries, not to be missed please!

22nd March 2024

Our Annual Fund Raiser Quiz Night returns on the 22nd March, 2024 at Heathfield Primary School, like last year, but with a difference! We listened and learned from last year how to improve the evening! So we have a new table lay out of the hall for starters & will have the questions on a screen!

We will also be offering a Fund Raising Babysitting service at our Hut for the Beavers & Cubs with a fun film night, as part of their fund raising Badge, all snuggled up in their sleeping bags for a sleepover with the Warranted Beaver & Cub Leaders, Jade, Lucy & Nicola, whilst ALL the Scouts are expected to be at the Hut as they will be having their own adventure of a Sleepover in Canvas within the grounds of the Hut under the supervision of Guy & Ted. Please make sure all young people have had their Dinner before being dropped off at 6.30/7pm. We will provide snacks, drink thru the evening and Breakfast too! With a pickup at 9.00am on Saturday morning (23/4/24).

If you just wish to have your Beaver or Cub just babysat for the duration of the Quiz, that is also possible, but you will have to collect them as soon as the Quiz finishes, not later than 10.45pm. Those staying over will gain their first Nights away badge or it will go towards their 5 Nights Away Badge. We would ask that every one of them has had their Dinner before dropping them off for the babysitting service at 6.30pm & 6.45pm at the Hut, so parents can then park up at Heathfield Primary School or walk up, as the Quiz doors open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm prompt start by our District Celebrity Question Master!

St George’s Day Parade – Sunday 21st April, 2024

This year, we will be taking part in the Whitton High Street Parade with the other Whitton Scout Groups. We will meet at Nelson Primary School, Whitton at 11.15am in Full Scouting Uniform, with ironed scarves, correct navy Scout Trousers, Uniform Explorer or Scout Shirts or Beaver or Cub Sweatshirt with all badges sewn on correctly please. The Parade will go up Whitton High Street returning to Nelson School for parent to collect their young person. We do ask that ALL young people attend this Parade as there are only two Mandatory Parades in the Year, St George’s Day, The Patron Saint of Scouting and Remembrance Sunday. We will Renew our Scouting Promise separately in each at the end their normal evening sessions. Therefore, a little different this year but making us more visible to the Community and letting people know 3rd Whitton Scout Group are active and full of adventures!

Remembrance Sunday 10th November, 2024

We have been invited this year to take part in the Royal British Legion Service of Remembrance which takes place in Radnor Gardens, Twickenham. We will parade up from Eil Pie Island Bridge, where we will meet and parade up to Radnor Gdns at 10.30am. The March is lead by Richmond Brass Band, the RAF Cadets and the local Twickenham Girl Guides. This will be the first time we have been invited so again we must be in our best and smartest Uniform. We will also be carrying our Section Flags and Union Flag along the route. This is such an honour and we have also been asked to help sell poppies in early November to help with the Poppy Appeal. Volunteers needed please.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
