On Sunday March 2nd, the Ibn Battuta branch of 3rd Whitton held an open event for
all Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in the Group to work towards their Environment Participation
Award. In under three hours dozens of little eco-warriors beavered away (excuse the
pun) to transform the grounds at the front of the hut. The neighbours will surely
be pleased when the fruits of our labours bloom into life later in the year!
The first
stage was to clear back leaves and create border beside the hut and along the fence.
Then it was time for a well earned break. We all piled inside to munch on the goodies
provided by the Mums and scared each other with tall tales of wild encounters with
wiggly worms and slippery slugs. The second stage was planting and watering. Cricket
stumps were used as improvised dibbers (or should that be dyb dyb dybbers?) and dozens
of flower bulbs (hooray for Poundland!) were pushed into the ground following by
a generous drink from the watering can. Meanwhile the Scouts were planting young
saplings along the front and side of the fence. Generous helpings of compost were
added to the soil mix, the saplings were given new homes and topped off with bark
chips.
Similar events are planned for later this year to be staged both at 3rd Whitton
HQ and at Crane Park, so keep your gardening gloves at the ready and stay tuned.
